Mah-Jong

Status:Active, open to new members
Leader:
When: Weekly on Monday afternoons 2:00 pm-4:00 pm
Venue: The Royal Oak

The aim of the game is to go Mah-Jong before the other players. That means having 4 Pungs, or Kongs (3 or 4 of the same tiles), and a pair of the same tile. It’s not unlike whist, but played with tiles. There are various rituals used when setting up the tiles for play which give the game an exotic feel.

Most of our group play to get Mah-Jong in a game, others prefer to score all hands, which gives you a very different play strategy. We do not gamble on game outcomes and haven't yet explored the penalties for making mistakes in play.

We follow the British Mah-Jong Association rules laid out in a u3a booklet, which is downloadable here.

There is also a very handy book of Rules most members like to have entitled 'Mah-Jong'-ISBN Number 978-0-7136-8951-8 published by A&C Black of London.

Most meetings we have 2-3 tables 6 -12 players, but in winter we have reached 5 tables of 4.  We have 33 members in the Group, but some only occasionally attend meetings.

There is no charge for the session, but we can buy a range of beverages and food from the bar.

We are a very friendly and sociable group, and we welcome new members, whether they have played before or want to learn. We look forward to sharing the fun of this intriguing game with you.
